How To Wash Pillows

Washing your pillows, whether they are filled with down and feather or synthetic fibers, is one of the best ways to keep them fresh, fluffy, and long-lasting. Down and feather pillows fit in any size washing machine and they come out of the wash beautifully. It’s one of the benefits of the incredible natural materials we use to fill our down and feather pillows. These natural fills are special not only for the support and softness that we love, but also for their easy maintenance. While people avoid washing pillows out of fear of damaging them, with the right steps, you can safely and effectively clean them at home.

How Often Should You Wash Your Pillow?

We recommend washing your pillow every six months, or every three months if you notice heavy use. Even if your pillow looks clean, it may still have buildup that affects its performance and cleanliness. Pillow protectors can catch most of these un-savories so you don’t need to wash your pillow as often as your pillow case. But, eventually your pillow will need a good washing too.

Washing Your Pillow

  • Quantity – Always wash two pillows at a time to keep your washer balanced on the spin cycle.
  • Water Temperature – Hot, warm, or cold; your choice - be aware that shrinkage of the fabric can occur with warm or hot water.
  • Spin Speed – Use the fastest speed to remove excess moisture.
  • Rinse – Add an extra rinse cycle to ensure all detergent is removed.
  • Soap – Gentle soap without additives.

Optional:

  • Non-chlorine bleach can be used for whitening.
  • Avoid fabric softeners because they can coat filling materials and, reduce breathability and reduce its loft.

Drying Your Pillow

  • Temperature – Low, warm, or hot (low is safest to avoid shrinkage with warmer temperatures).
  • Dry time – Pillows may take multiple cycles to dry thoroughly.
  • Clumping or Odor – These are signs that your pillow is not dry yet. You want it to be completely dry to prevent mold.
  • Dry Test – – Hand fluff between cycles. A pillow can feel dry outside but still be damp inside.

Optional:

  • Toss in clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help fluff and reduce dry time.
  • Add a dryer sheet for a fresh scent.

Re-fluffing a pillow between washings

Even when clean, pillows benefit from occasional re-fluffing to maintain their shape.

  • Place in dryer on low heat for 15–20 minutes.
  • Add three tennis balls or dryer balls.
  • Optional: include a damp washcloth or dryer sheet to refresh.
