How to Tell When Your Pillow Needs Replacing

Over time, even the best pillows lose their ability to provide the comfort and support your body needs for a good night’s sleep. Just like a mattress, a pillow has a lifespan. Recognizing the signs that it's time for a replacement can help improve sleep quality and help you wake up feeling refreshed.

No matter what material your pillow is made of, regular care and proper use can significantly extend its life.

How Long Should a Pillow Last?

Down and Feather: These pillows are known for their durability and can last 5 to 10 years or more with proper care. They respond well to regular washing and drying, which helps maintain loft and freshness.

Synthetic: A good rule of thumb with synthetic is 1-2 years, depending on the quality of materials and usage.

Foam: Foam pillows have a variable lifespan, as it depends on the density and type of foam used. Over time, foam may become firmer, and you may notice changes in comfort and support. When it no longer meets your comfort needs, it may be time for a replacement.

Signs It’s Time for a New Pillow

Even with proper care, all pillows eventually reach the end of their life. Here are some common signs to watch for:

Loss of Loft or Support: If your pillow feels flat or no longer supports your head and neck properly, it's likely time for a new one.

Lumpiness or Clumping: Fill that no longer distributes evenly can affect comfort and support. This applies to both natural and synthetic fillings.

Foam Changes: Foam pillows that have become too firm or have lost their ability to conform may no longer provide optimal comfort.

When in doubt, the folding test tells you when it’s time

Down and Feather:

  1. Lay your fluffed pillow on a hard surface. Fold the pillow in half and squeeze out all the air (fold king pillows in thirds).

2. Release the pillow and see if it unfolds and returns to its original shape.

3. A worn-out pillow will remain folded

Synthetic:

1. Fluff and fold the pillow as above.

2. Before releasing, place a 10oz. weight on the pillow, a medium-sized tennis shoe is perfect.

3. A pillow with support will throw the tennis shoe and unfold itself.

A worn-out pillow will remain folded.

To get the most life out of your down, feather and down alternative pillows, keep them clean by using a pillow cover and regular washing. With proper care, they can provide exceptional comfort and support for up to 10 years. When it’s time to replace your pillow, Restful Nights has many options to choose from in the pillow section of our website.
